Featuring insights from Thomas Müller, Chief Technology Officer, Jaguar Land Rover

Welcome back to the AI Auto Podcast. I’m Javier Mota, and today we’re live in spirit from New York City for one of the most important launches in modern Jaguar history.

After years of radical rebranding, a polarizing concept, and a complete pause on new-car sales, the production Jaguar Type 01 has finally arrived. Designed, engineered, and built in the UK on the all-new Jaguar Electric Architecture — JEA — this is the most powerful, most aerodynamic, and most technologically ambitious Jaguar ever created.

And who better to help us unpack it than the man ultimately responsible for the technical side of this rebirth: Thomas Müller, Chief Technology Officer at Jaguar Land Rover.

Episode deep dive (key facts + context):

On October 6, 2026, Jaguar staged a dramatic New York premiere. Digital takeovers lit up Times Square, DUMBO, and the Lower East Side before the Type 01 made a dynamic arrival at STORIED in West Chelsea.

This is the production evolution of the bold Type 00 concept. It’s a long, low, four-door electric grand tourer with exuberant proportions — long bonnet, dramatically low roofline, and a presence that deliberately breaks from conventional EV packaging.

Core technical highlights (straight from the launch):

Platform: Bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) — 850-volt system, purpose-built so the design vision didn’t have to compromise on height or proportions.

Powertrain: Tri-motor all-wheel drive — one front motor + dual rear motors. Peak output up to 1,030 PS (around 1,015–1,030 hp depending on reporting) and 1,365 Nm of torque.

Performance: 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 3.2 seconds; 100–180 km/h (62–112 mph) in just 4.0 seconds — “performance in reserve” that Jaguar emphasizes as a true GT trait.

Battery & Range: 118 kWh usable capacity. Expected EPA range up to 400 miles (≈644 km); WLTP up to ~450 miles / 720 km. Sustained high-speed highway range claimed at up to 320 miles.

Charging: 350 kW DC capability — up to 200 miles of range in as little as 13 minutes. Intelligent split-charging helps on lower-power infrastructure.

Chassis & Aero: Extremely rigid structure (enabled by the battery acting as a stressed member and innovative tri-apex nodes that allow battery cells to sit further forward). Active aero including a multi-stage deployable rear spoiler. All-wheel steering. Air suspension with twin-valve active dampers.

Innovation scale: More than 360 patent applications filed for this program alone.

Thomas Müller has been JLR’s CTO (and previously Executive Director of Product Engineering) since April 2022, arriving from Volkswagen Group/CARIAD with deep experience in chassis, ADAS, and software-defined vehicles. Under his technical leadership, the team rejected existing skateboard platforms because they would have forced a taller, more conventional silhouette.

JEA was created specifically to protect the “Copy Nothing” design purity while delivering hypercar-level performance and real-world grand-touring range.

Key talking points we explore in this episode:

Why a completely new architecture was non-negotiable.

How the team solved the “impossible panel” and the packaging challenges of keeping the car so low while still delivering 400-mile range.

The software and digital side of the Type 01 experience (control-on-demand interfaces, ClearSight camera rear vision because there is no traditional rear window, etc.).

Positioning: starting around $130,500 / £120–130k territory — deliberately under pure hypercars and some ultra-luxury EVs, aimed at a younger, design- and tech-literate buyer, especially in North America.

Orders open early 2027; production begins in the UK (Solihull body and assembly, with key components from other JLR UK sites).

Closing thought:

Jaguar didn’t just launch a car in New York. It launched a statement: the brand is now an ultra-luxury electric player that prioritizes drama, performance, and engineering originality over volume or conventional EV packaging. Whether the polarizing design and the bold price-to-performance balance will win the market remains the biggest open question — but the technical ambition is undeniable.

That’s S7E49. The Jaguar Type 01 is finally here.
